Relocating with your family can be stressful, but add in pets, and it may seem like it’s an impossible task. While it’s true that this adds more planning to this life change, it doesn’t make it impossible. With some planning and the consideration of small details, you can make moving with pets something far less stressful. The guide below can help you get started.
1. Choose How You’ll Move Your Pets
When it comes to moving your pets, you can either drive them or fly them. While the decision is up to you and what you’re comfortable with, it’s important to consider the details of each option.
- Driving: Driving your pet to your new home can allow you to ensure they have a comfortable ride along the way. However, you will have to plan out pit stops and make sure your vehicle is equipped with a comfortable and safe place for them to sit. If you have multiple pets, it may be difficult to fit many carriers in the same vehicle.
- Flying: Flying with your pet in cargo can be stressful since you’re not able to see them the entire time. However, this is generally the only option unless your pet is small enough to fit in a carry-on pet bag for inside the cabin. If you do fly with them in cargo, make sure you read through the airline’s rules and regulations ahead of time. It’s also recommended to call and discuss the trip ahead of time so you can secure reservations for when you need them.
Tip: You can hire people to fly or drive your pet if you can’t, although this can be quite costly.
2. Go to the Vet
Whether you’re driving or flying, you must take your pet to the vet before you set out on your journey. This will give you more insight into their health and ensure they are in good enough shape to travel. You can also ask questions about how to calm nerves and anything else you’d like to know about taking them with you. If you’re flying, this will be a mandatory part of getting your pet to travel. It’s best to do it a few weeks before you set out, so you have everything ready to go.
3. Create a Travel Bag
Just like kids, pets need a lot of things to ensure they are comfortable throughout their journey. This should include food, water, toys, blankets, and any medication that they require. While you can bring anything you want for them in the car (if you’re driving), the same can’t be said for plane transportation. Each airline has its own rules and regulations, so check with yours to see what you’re allowed to pack for your pet.
4. Make Sure They are Tagged
To make sure your pet can be found if they get lost, it’s recommended to give them a collar with a personalized tag. You may also want to have your pet micro-chipped when you go to their vet visit before leaving.
Is Your Pet Ready to Travel?
No matter what kind of pet you have, it’s important to make sure they have everything they need for a smooth traveling experience. From an I.D. tag to a clean bill of health, everything you do can help give you peace of mind your precious pet will be okay.
